The Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild, together with friends of Calvin Grimm, present CALVIN GRIMM · Studio Selects on Saturday and Sunday, July 19 and 20, 2025, 11 am – 5 pm at the Byrdcliffe Barn, 485 Upper Byrdcliffe Road, Byrdcliffe Arts Colony, Woodstock, NY. Curated by Susana Leval and Sylvia Leonard Wolf, this special solo exhibition features paintings from Calvin’s archive housed in his hand-built home studio in Shady, NY. The exhibit is a celebration of Calvin’s lifelong career in abstract expressionism and as a fixture of the Woodstock artistic community. Calvin’s work draws on his years of wilderness exploration and education around the world, encompassing the Alaskan and Yucatan coasts, the wildlands of Wyoming, the depths of the ocean and cosmos, and the Lascaux and Chauvet cave paintings found in southern France. Reception Saturday and Sunday, 1 pm–3 pm.

Today, a major collector acquired this 60" x 72" oil on canvas. "Michelle's Amaryllis" is the sister painting to another canvas the same size which had been in the same person's collection for 10 years.
This closes the circle.
Feeling grateful.

One of my collectors commissioned a painting to be created on the bottom of their swimming pool.

The drip technique is an element I sometimes use on my canvases, in combination with traditional brushwork in oil. The pool required a specialized epoxy pool paint.

Commissions always summon creative solutions, and are therefore very satisfying.

In 1976, a Japanese architectural publication featured my home. They had been inspired by an earlier publication, Woodstock Handmade Houses, which had garnered international notice in 1974.
Because my hands built and rebuilt everything here over 53 years, I am at peace and pleased with it all.
I will be sharing highlights of my home evolution, the grounds and studio evolution as well. The enjoyment I’m getting from discoveries made while organizing my archives, I simply want to share.
